Choosing Video Duration and Resolution Without Wasting Credits

Two controls sit next to each other in every video generator and they behave completely differently. Resolution changes how the finished clip looks. Duration changes how much of it the model has to invent — and on almost every video model, it is also what you are billed on. Getting the order of those decisions right is the difference between three cheap attempts and one expensive disappointment.

Duration is billed, resolution is usually banded

The overwhelming majority of video configurations are priced per second of output, which means a ten-second clip costs about twice a five-second one of the same settings. Resolution, by contrast, tends to move you between price bands rather than scaling smoothly. The practical consequence: shortening a clip is the most reliable lever you have on cost, and it is available on every attempt.

Long clips are harder, not just dearer

Every additional second is more opportunity for identity, lighting and background to drift away from where they started. A five-second clip that holds together is not evidence that the ten-second version will. Treat duration as a quality setting as much as a cost setting, and buy length only once you know the shorter version works.

Test at the short end, deliver at the long end

The cheapest workflow is almost always: generate the shortest clip the model offers, judge motion and likeness, adjust the prompt, and only then extend. Two short tests plus one long final usually costs less than two long attempts, and it gives you a much better final because you fixed the prompt on evidence rather than on a hunch.

Resolution should follow where the clip is going

A clip destined for a phone screen in a vertical feed gains very little from the highest resolution tier and pays for it on every attempt. Higher resolution earns its cost when there is fine detail that matters — fabric, hair, text, skin texture at close range — or when the clip will be viewed large. If you cannot name what the extra pixels are resolving, they are not doing anything.

Aspect ratio is a third setting, and it is not resolution

Across the catalogue, models express size in three different ways: some take a resolution band, some take an aspect ratio, and some take explicit dimensions. They are not synonyms. Setting a resolution without an aspect ratio leaves the shape to the model, and the most frequent version of "the output is the wrong size" is actually "the shape was never specified". If your platform has a fixed shape, state it explicitly rather than assuming the resolution implies it.

Vertical, square and wide are not crops of each other

It is tempting to generate once at a wide ratio and crop down to vertical afterwards, and for a still that sometimes works. For video it usually does not, because the model composes for the frame it was given: at 16:9 it places the subject with room on both sides and lets the motion travel horizontally, which is exactly the part a vertical crop removes. Generating at the shape you will publish at costs the same as generating at any other shape and gives you a composition built for it. Cropping is the more expensive option once you count the regenerations.

The same setting does not cost the same on every model

Duration and resolution are the two levers, but the exchange rate between them and your balance varies enormously across the catalogue — the gap between the cheapest and most expensive video configuration is more than two orders of magnitude. That means a habit like "always use ten seconds" has a completely different cost depending on which template you are in. The practical version of this: when you switch to an unfamiliar template, re-read the credit cost before repeating your usual settings, because the settings you carried over from a cheap model can be a very different decision on an expensive one.

When the result is close but not right, change one thing

The most expensive iteration pattern is changing the prompt, the duration and the resolution all at once, because whatever happens next teaches you nothing. If the motion is wrong, change only the motion wording. If the subject drifts, change only the duration. If the detail is soft, change only the resolution. Each of those is a cheap, short test that isolates one variable, and three of them in sequence typically costs less than two rounds of changing everything and guessing which change helped.

How to use it

  1. Decide the final aspect ratio first — it is determined by where the clip will be published, not by taste.
  2. Set duration to the shortest option the model offers for your first attempt.
  3. Set resolution to the middle tier unless you can name the detail that needs the top one.
  4. Generate, then judge two things only: does the motion read correctly, and does the subject hold together.
  5. Fix the prompt if either failed, and re-test at the same short duration. Do not extend a clip that is not working.
  6. Once a short version is right, extend the duration and, if needed, raise the resolution for the final render.

Why did doubling the duration roughly double the cost?

Most video models are priced per second of output rather than per generation, so length translates almost directly into cost.

Will a higher resolution fix blurry or unstable motion?

No. Resolution affects detail, not coherence. Unstable motion is a prompt or duration problem and more pixels will only render the instability more clearly.

Does the longest duration give a better result?

It gives more result. Quality typically degrades over the length of a clip as drift accumulates, so the last seconds are usually the weakest.

The output came back the wrong shape. What happened?

Probably an aspect ratio that was never set. Resolution and aspect ratio are separate controls, and leaving the shape unstated lets the model choose it.

What is the cheapest way to iterate?

Short duration, middle resolution, several attempts. Reserve long and high-resolution settings for a version you already know works.
