Two things get confused. High contrast means crushed blacks and blown highlights, which is not what most people mean by film. Film tonality means highlights rolling off gradually into white instead of clipping, with mid-tones sitting lower than a digital curve puts them. Grain matters too, but only when it is sized in proportion to the output — grain applied as a fixed overlay reads as digital noise, which is why people say added grain looks fake.
